Trouble with the download?

Some schools have difficulty accessing executable files on the Internet. Internet Security at some schools is so tight that users may not be able to download files with the .exe extension. Although our HLS software is safe for your use, malicious programs use the same extension and they may be blocked at your site. You may be allowed to download files with the .zip extension. You should try that next. Save this file on your desktop. You should then try to "unzip" it.
Zipped version of HLS update
It will require that you have WinZip on your computer.

If you still can not download this update, click here to try these Advanced File Transfer steps.

So, what's new?

05-07-08 This update resolves a minor issue that occurs when the software attempts to upgrade its configuration to Full Networking when it was previously upgraded to Full Networking by another computer elsewhere on the network.
04-18-08 A special request for Southland Boys' High School has been added.
04-18-08 A special request for Winton School has been added.
04-17-08 A special request for Del Dios Middle School has been added. The window in the Network Admin program has been enlarged to make it easier to handle a larger number of user tabs.
04-16-08 A special request for Marinette Middle School has been added.
04-15-08 A special request for Hidden Valley Middle School has been added. This request allows the school to create the export files needed by their Automatic Phone Dialing System. If you would like to know more about how to interface your HLS program with phone dialers, please contact us.

The beta version of this interface is available to all schools at this time at no charge. Update your software, use the Groups button on the home screen to access a group and then click [Phone Dialer]. Then follow the six steps to create your phone dialer export file.

03-27-08 The "Alert" feature is now available to schools using simple networking. A StartUp Log has been added to improve finding issues with network configuration differences.
02-29-08 A problem with dates with the New Zealand schools has been fixed.
02-27-08 It was brought to our attention that if a Publisher (simple networking only) uses "Sharing Setup" to down grade to Subscriber's status, the publisher flag was not deleted from the shared folder forcing the next publisher to "bump" the previous one off. This has been corrected.
02-26-08 A special request for Holy Ghost Catholic School has been added.
02-18-08 The school list has been updated.
02-13-08 A special request for Wilson Middle School has been added.
02-06-08 A special request for Tipler Middle School has been added.

01-04-08 A special request has been added for Pioneer High School that others may find quite handy.

We have added a window that will allow you to quickly flag a group of students. You can bring up any group of students using the "Groups" button on the home screen. You can then flag these students by clicking the button at the bottom of the window that says "Auto Flag this Group."

For example if you find that you are updating your class lists at the change of the semester and find that you have many students who have no roll room teacher because they have moved away and are no longer enrolled. You can quickly flag these students as "Withdrawn" without having to edit each record one at a time.

Another example of a good use for this routine would be to daily flag all the students who are on Honor Level Four. Then at the end of the year, you can pull a list of students who have ever been on Honor Level Four.

Please note: To use this routine, you must first create the flag. Do this by selecting "Flag Resister" from the "Groups" menu and then click on "Add Flag."

Call us if you would like any assistance with this new feature or any thing with The Honor Level System.

01-22-08 Two schools have called to say that features in the HLS program that they used to use often are no longer available to them. After a bit of detective work we have discovered that with the advent of new flat screen monitors, the height to width ration on our screens has changed. While taking advantage of these newer wide screen monitors we see that we have accidently moved some of the dialog boxes off the edge of older monitors that many of you still use. It may seem that the program has locked up and that you can not do anything, when in fact the program is waiting for you to click in a window that you can not access because it is located off the edge of your monitor.

We know for sure that this problem has occured for some people when trying to enter comments and notes into the student record, as well as when you attempt to print reports for a whole class from the Groups window.

We hope to have found all of these instances and have corrected them. If you are using an older monitor, please update your software now. And let us know right away if you think your program is not responding to you or if any features seem to be no longer available.

01-18-08 This update solves a problem that high schools using the program were seeing on their detention attendance lists. The software was printing the letters A B C .... instead of the grade levels: 10 11 12 on the lists. High schools may want to update their program at this time.
01-16-08 The HLSNetAdmin program that is used by schools running the Full Networking option has been updated. This was done to make it run correctly for schools using multiple directories. This update affects very few schools.

A school was having a problem when a work station that had once been used as a publisher (but not any longer) wanted to update pages with the Web Page Engine even though the station didn't need to. Because the user did not have access to the web folder an error message was appearing. The software has been modified so that only those logged on as Publisher will attempt to access this folder.

01-15-08 A special request for Greenville Middle School has been added. Greenville wants to give all the students who have not received any demerits in a school quarter Bravo Points. We have added software that will do this without having you bring up each student's record one at a time.

To do this, begin by clicking on "Data Analysis" ... then the "Rank Order" tab at the top. First you must set up your starting and ending dates and check the appropriate grade level boxes. Then click "View List." This enables the "Show Award Bonus Frame" button. When you click it, you can select the number of Bravo points you want to award and the maximum number of demerits a student can have to receive the award.

01-10-08 A special request for Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik (Bigstone) School in Canada has been added that allows the software to correctly handle the computer's "English (Canada) Regional Settings." This allows the programme to accept the dd-mm-yyyy date format without switching to the New Zealand settings that use the same date system. If you are a Canadian school and would like to take advantage of these new capabilities please contact us using the Canadian Toll Free number: 877-245-1894. We will be pleased to help you configure your Honour Level settings.
01-08-08 A problem was brought to our attention. If a user adds comments on the window where infractions are entered and selects the option to have it printed "always," that printing option was not being passed on to the student's actual record. This has been fixed.
01-04-08 A special request has been added for Washington Park Middle School.
01-02-08 Leap Year Fix. We forgot to allow for the 29th day of February so your 2008 dates will be off by one until you update your software. If you are not able to update your software at this time, you can get the software use the correct dates by adding one day when you make your entry. For example if you want the date to be 01-02, enter it as 01-03 for now and then update your software as soon as possible.
12-26-07 The school list has been updated.

12-19-07 A special request has been added for Pioneer High School that allows you to print student ID numbers as well as names on the detention attendance lists.

To activate this option check item 5 in Options #3 of the site editor as shown at the right. This needs to be done at the computer where you print the slips and lists.

12-04-07 The school list has been updated.
11-28-07 Sharing Setup has been updated to handle schools running the program in multiple directories. When setting up sharing, if there is more than one set of HLS data files, the program will ask if you would like to share ALL of your directories. This eliminates the need to set each directory's sharing settings one by one and should save your tech support people a lot of time.
11-27-07 In semester utilities there was a button to set a Restart Marker that did nothing when clicked. The routine has been restored and works normally as before.

Schools running networking found that if more than one person logged on as a publisher at different times of the day some entries might be missing. This has been fixed.

In the past, if a user, working as an editor, made changes to student records when no publisher was logged on, those changes would not appear at the editor's computer until a publisher processed them. This update allows the editor to see his or her own entries any time (even though they have not yet been published), but only at the computer where the entries were made.

11-20-07 It was found that an error occurred if the user attempted to add a note to an infraction that had been previously deleted. This has been corrected.

The school lists has been updated.

11-09-07 "Fatal Error reading site.dat" warning appeared after a school rolled back data to an earlier date IF the school included commas in the text for infractions, consequences, or administrative assignment options. This has been corrected.

Also, the 10-09-07 update that allows schools to have records of students with the same name was also filling empty discarded records with the record of the last student in alphabetical order creating multiple records that were the same for the last kid in the list. This has been brought to our attention and fixed.

11-08-07 A new problem was discovered and repaired. Some users like to pull up student records by double clicking on names in group lists. Now that the software can support students with the same name, the program is using student numbers instead of names to locate the record from the group lists. If your HLS data base does not include student ID numbers the program wasn't able to locate the record you wanted. Once again, you can access student records from the group lists even though you do not have student ID numbers.
11-07-07 A special request for Pioneer High School has been added.
11-01-07 The Web Page Engine had been asking users for information about their zip code. This is only needed for schools who have upgraded from simple networking. Schools that are using full networking do not need to do this. We have changed the software so that it will not request it if it is not needed.
10-26-07 The school list has been updated.
10-22-07 When viewing photos of groups of students, such as classroom, or grade Level, the "Next" and "Prev" button didn't work well. This has been repaired.

We fixed a problem that occured when the software on Subscribe Only workstations thought it should be calling up the Web Page Engine if the user had read only access to the web folders. Subscribe Only Workstations do not need to call this routine.

A change was made in the way we activate the Web Page Engine that should make it easier for schools who purchase this upgrade to get it started the first time. - Remember, schools who already have Full Networking can upgrade to the Web Engine with no additional fees.

10-17-07 We received a report that after giving a student a "Fresh Start" you were not able to close the student record window. This has been fixed.
10-15-07 A special request has been added for Washington Park Middle School. They have asked that we include the total number of demerits a student has ever earned in the lists prepared by the Web Page Engine. To do this we have added a column to the Groups data window that shows a student's total number of dememits.

Even if you are not using the Web Engine, this data can be very handy when exporting to a spred sheet where you can use its sorting and graphing tools.

10-09-07 Until now all student names in the HLS data base had to have unique spellings. Some schools might have a few students with the same name. They were able to manage this by adding something simple to the spelling such as a number for the grade Level. With this update, you can now have duplicate names as long as the students have different ID numbers. If you enter a name that occurs more than once in your data base, a new window will appear showing you all the students with that name. You will also see their ID numbers, grade levels, and teacher's names. Using this added information we hope you can easily select which student you want.

An additional request from Hidden Valley Middle school (which made the above necessary) allows you to enter infractions using the student's ID number or name, whichever you prefer.

These changes have also forced a change in which data moves from computer to computer at schools that are using Full Networking. Full Networiking schools need to be sure that all computers are update as soon as possible if any computer is updated. We strongly recomend that you update a "Publisher's" computer first.

10-02-07 A special request has been added for Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts.
10-01-07 A special request has been added for Wilson Middle School. They noticed that when you add a comment to an event in a student's record that you can indicate if and when you want it included in printed reports. However, that option was not avaiable when you added the comment on the window where the infractions are entered. We have now included this feature at both locations.

This year, we have found that many of you are returning to work from summer break only to find that your district IT people have completely reformatted your hard drives. As a result, archived data from last year is no longer there. If you were using either full or simple networking last year, we are often able to find last year's data on your file server. We have programmed the software to check for a missing archive of last year's data and restore it to your computer. This will occur automatically, however, your program has always been programmed to remove the old data files from your shared folder after October 10. This new routine will be handy next year. And if you install this update before 10-10-2007, it will set you up with an archive of last year's data if you don't already have one.

09-27-07 A special request has been added for Juniper Elementary School.
09-25-07 A special request has been added for Rainier Middle School.

Some schools would like their attendance lists sorted by grade Level. There is a check box on the "Print Task Manager" window that will allow you to do this. It was discovered that when it was checked that although the lists were sorted by grade Level, they were not separated by consequence. This has been fixed.

Also, for schools with full networking, we found that if an "Editor" was entering infractions and one of the infractions was identical to an infraction that had already been processed by the "Publisher" the software would lock up after notifying the user that the two entries were the same. This has been fixed.

09-21-07 A new feature has been added to the Web Page Engine that will allow you to export class lists to your web pages. You used to have to bring up each class list in the "Groups" window and then export them one at a time. Now you can select "All Roll" or "All Advisor" and export each classroom as a separate page in a single opertation. If you need to do this please call for further assistance.
09-18-07 Not along ago a new feature was added to the program that allowed schools to substitute their own titles for the Honor Levels. These are called "Aliases" and they can be set in the site editor (Options #1).

Although this capability has been available for some time now, it was only recently discovered that when selecting Honor Levels in the Groups Window, the lists would appear to be empty unless the aliases contained the words: "one", "two", etc. This has been corrected. Schools who use aliases for their Honor Levels should update their software at this time.

09-16-07 A special request for Gateway Middle School has been added.
09-14-07 A special request for Washington Park Middle School has been added.
09-13-07 The School Honor Level Web page has been improved for schools using the Web Page Engine.
Also improvements have been made to the routine that imports demographic data for schools that need to update class lists.
09-12-07 A special request for Pioneer High School has been added: The limits on the software have been increased to allow for larger schools.
08-24-07 A new tool has been added to the student record window. You will find a button there to view a history of the student's demerits. This displays a bar graph showing how many demerits were active in the roll over window for the past 14 days and the projected number of demerits that will be in the roll over window for the next 14 days.

Also added to the student record window is a drop down list showing not only the day a student could be back on Honor Level One but the days back on levels two and three if appropriate.

08-20-07 The school list has been updated.
08-15-07 A special request for Winton School in New Zealand has been added.
08-10-07 The new Web Page Engine has been added which expands the features of this popular upgrade. Ask us about trying it for free at your school. Make sure your shoes are on because this one will blow your socks off!
08-04-07 Initial changes for the 2007-2008 school year have been added. Be sure to update your software again soon. Watch this page for new updates to appear.
06-07-07 Changes were made to handle the date format for New Zealand schools.
06-01-07 A special request from Forest Park Middle School has been added. This request allows you to view and print a summary of any student's discipline history. You will find a new button for the summary on the student record window. You will be able to view the summary before you print it.

You can also access the new report from "Data Analysis".

You can print summaries for any group of students from the groups button, but you will not view the report before it is printed from there. The software will skip reports for students who have no entries in their discipline record.

05-31-07 The software trial period for Juniper Elementary School has been extended.
05-25-07 In preparation for future use, the program will now know when a user is launching a version of HLS previous years that has expired.
05-15-07 A special request for Hidden Valley Middle School has been added.
05-03-07 The Staff Report routine in data analysis had difficulty telling in which year a event occured in a student record when viewing archived data. As a result it ignored some events. This has been corrected.

It is no longer necessary to re-launch HLS when you want to access archived data. Simply wait a few seconds and the Archive Assistant will automatically re-launch the program itself.

04-27-07 Addressed some issues for schools who have let their Web Page Engine trial expire.
04-23-07 A special request for Mission Middle School has been added.
04-09-07 A special request for Rainier Middle School has been added.

04-08-07 The Web Page Engine update routine may have been causing problems for schools not using the engine when trying to access the site editor. This has been corrected.
04-03-07 A special request for Issiquah Middle School has been added.

04-02-07 A special request for Boulder Elementary School has been added.

03-24-07 The request to add gradelevel lists to the web page engine created a problem with the original Honor Level Lists. This has been discovered and repaired.

03-12-07 It was discovered that "Rank Order by Demerits" was not handling the new Restart feature correctly. This has been fixed.
If you have set any Restart Markers please update your software now.

03-06-07 A special request from Showalter Middle School has been added that gives you the option to sort attendance lists by grade Level. You can activate this by checking the box in the print task manager the next time you print slips and lists. The feature will remain activated until you uncheck the box later.

A special request from Showalter Middle School has been added that tells the Web Page Engine to create Honor Level Lists for each of your grade levels.

A special request from Port Susan Middle School has been added that allows you to add a special message to the "Welcome Back" to Honor Level One slip. You can enter the line of text you want to add to the slip in the "Site Editor." Click on the "Options #1" tab at the top.
