When entering our No-Shows, with code 9, we get a message that says "Invalid Infraction Code." The 0 for absent kids works fine.
Why not the 9?
Someone may have edited your site data and put the no shows in with a letter instead of the 9.

- Click Site Editor
- Click the "Infractions" Tab
If it is not there, click "Add Item" and create your own:
9 5 Report to detention as assigned
Please note: You will not see a listing for item 0 (Absent/Excused) it is hard coded in the program. Do not add it here.
How can we set up other computers so they can view the same data?
You will need your network manager to set up a shared folder that the users of these computers can all see and use. They MUST have all privileges in this folder. They will be writing files, renaming files, and deleting them.
At the computer where you are currently operating the Honor Level System do these steps:
- Update the software on your computer with the latest version
- Save this file in your shared folder and then unzip it.
- Launch HLS
- Click Utilities
- Hold down Shift and Alt on your keyboard while you click the Directories button.
- Change the drive letter to the one where your shared folder is found.
- Highlight your shared folder.
- Make sure that the Share as Publisher button is still selected.
- Click Set Sharing Path
- Launch HLS and then close it down. You will see colored bars zip by as the program shuts down. That indicates that the data is being published to your shared folder.
Now at each other computer follow these steps:
- If HLS has already been installed on this computer:
- Open the shared folder
- Unzip the update file you placed there from the instructions above.
- If the program has not been on this computer before, download the Full Installation file and unzip it. If you see error messages click "Ignore" and continue.
- Launch HLS.
- If you see an Installation window with many choices:
- Click "Update From Network"
- Set the same sharing path as you did above. Note that this time you should have "Share as other user" selected.
- Do not have more than one Publisher.
- Close the program and re-launch it.
- If HLS has already been running on this machine follow these steps:
- Click "Utilities"
- Hold down Shift and Alt while you click "Directories"
- Select: "Share as other user"
- Select the drive where your shared folder sits.
- Highlight the shared folder.
- Click "Set Sharing Path"
- Close the Program and re-launch it.
Why do we get detentions slips with a blank consequence?
The Honor Level System allows for up to 7 stages of consequence. You can set up these consequences using the "Site Data Editor." You want to be sure that the patern of consequences for each student matches the patern you have set up in the editor. If the students' pattern has more steps than you have defined in the editor you will get blank consequences on the slips.
- Click Utilities
- Click Site Editor
- Click the "Consequences" tab.
The check boxes on the left indicate which stages of consequences your students will receive. If you have check boxes next to consequences that are not defined either provide a definition for the consequence or uncheck the box.
Many schools have defined the highest consequence as "Administrative Action" If there are extra stages that you are not using you might like to change these steps to: "Administrative Action (1)" and "Administrative Action (2)" simply because it is a convenient way to indicate that a student is repeating the Administrative Action stage.
Check the boxes for the stages you want to use and close the window. You will be asked to save the changes and then asked to update the student records to match this new patern. Say yes to both of these.
Can we put a student on a seven day window?
Most of the students tracked on the Honor Level System look work well on a 14 day window. This window is too long for some special education students and younger children. You can place individual students on a shorter 7 day window when you feel this time line will help them learn to change their behavior.
Each child's record includes a six character flag register. You will see this as a series of question marks with, possibly, one or two letters in the group. Change any one of the question marks to an exclamation mark and your software will know to calculate this student's Honor Level and Stage of Consequence on a 7 day basis instead of 14.
There are quicker ways to add groups of students and assign whole grade levels, but if you only want to change the window for one or two students, you can click the Edit Biographic button on the upper left side of the student record window. If you see a listing in the "Current Flags" frame that says: "!-7 Day Kids" you can simply double-click it. You can also manually change a ? to a ! in the flag register on this screen.
If you have several students to place on the short window, follow these steps:
- Click Groups on the home screen
- Select "Flag Register"
- If "!-7 Day Kids" appears in the list:
- double-click it
- Use the Add Member button on the group window to enter your student names.
- If "!-7 Day Kids" is not a choice:
- click "Add Flag"
- Set the new flag character as an exclamation mark.
- Label the flag "7-Day Kids"
- Use the Add Member button on the group window to enter your student names.
If you want to put all the students in certain grades on a 7 day window follow these steps:
- Click on Utilities on the home screen
- Click on Site Editor
- Click the Options #4 tab
- Check the boxes next to the grades you want on the 7 day window.
- Click Close and save the changes.
I am getting a new PC. How do I move my HLS to the new machine?
- Before you lose the use of your current computer, make a back up of your HLS data by clicking on Utilities and then Back Up
- At the new computer, download the Full Installation Program from: www.honorlevel.com/full.exe.
- Save it on your desktop and unzip it. If may see a couple of error messages while it is installing, click on Ignore and continue.
- Make a shortcut to the program. You will find it at: c:\Program Files\Honor Level System\HLS.EXE
- Put your back up disk in the computer and launch HLS with your shortcut.
- Launch HLS with your new computer.
- You will see a screen with many choices.
- Click the Disk Install button.
I was trying to access last year's data and now I can not get back to this years. Help! [Full Question]
To get the program pointing to the right place again do this:
- On your desktop, open "My Computer"
- Open your "local c:drive"
- Find and open the folder: "Windows"
- If you do not see a list of files, click the text: "Show files"
- Find the file: hlspath
- Click on it once and then press delete on your keyboard to Delete it.
- Run HLS again. It will launch in the right space again.
To change to another year, do this:
- Click: "Utilities"
- Click: "Archive Assistant"
- Select the year that you want to view and then click the "Switch" button.
- You will be told to restart your program. When you do, you will be in the archive.
- To return to this year's data, simply close the program and then restart it.
If the year that you want to view is not listed in the Archive Assistant but you have the data on a disk, see the next FAQ.

I need your help. We were trying to get HLS data from previous years (that had been saved onto disk) into the current Honor Level Program. We went to the Utilities component and then the directories to see if we couldn't get the old data retrieved into the current program from the floppy. We hit Change directory to the floppy drive. Data did not come up and now when we tried to access the current data from the floppy, we get a message that reads "Run Time error 76 Path not found.
Can you help me out with this dilemma? I need historic data for a current student ASAP because of legal procedings. Everything is backed up on disk. If possible, could you call me or if you have an easy-to-understand solution, please email!

How can I view archived data that is stored on a floppy disk?
A new button has been added to the "Archive Assistant" to help you add data from a previous school year to your archives from a floppy disk. This is especially helpful to someone who has a new computer or a different one from the one used last year.
Don't forget to return you floppy disk to a safe place in case you need it again in the future.
How can I delete all the students in the Special Ed. Class?
If you have a group of exceptional education students that you do not want to include in The Honor Level program, you can easily delete them if they are assigned to the same teacher and they are the ONLY students assigned to that teacher.

When the program was originally written computer memory was a critical concern. Storing the student's full name in one field allowed me to make the most efficient use of memory. We will exploring an alternate way of doing this. Until then, try the following. It is a technique that has worked well for us. When you enter a name such as: Rogelio Rojas Nuñez, enter it with only one space like this: Rogelio RojasNuñez.

The Honor Level System allows you to input both major and minor offenses. Major problems are entered on the student record screen by first clicking on the Administrative Assignment button. The computer does not assign a consequence for these entries. It is assumed that the consequence has been determined by the student and the administrator. This entry simply records what the administrator has choose to do and adjusts the student's Honor Level accordingly.
Lesser offenses are entered using the Infractions button on the main screen. You may set up these infractions using the "Site Editor" found in "Utilities." The program will assign a consequence for this entry, determined by the number of infractions that have been entered (Note: it only counts infractions weighted at 3 or more demerits.)
I third option is also available for the most minor offenses. These must first be set up using the "site editor" where you will click on the "Minor Infractions" tab. The event will become part of the student's record, demerits will be assigned which will effect his Honor Level, but no consequence will be assigned. This is very useful if the teacher has already handled the consequence in her classroom.

We have been very impressed with your Honor Level System and are currently exploring its potential applicability in Primaria and Secundaria.
We are, however, having a number of difficulties. First and foremost, we have a different tradition of naming here in Mexico, where the students all use three names - their first name, followed by their father's last name, then their mother's last name. (Eg Rogelio Rojas Nuñez) Accordingly we would need to enter them into the system in this way, but it only allows for the use of two names. Can it be altered to meet with our requirements?
Secondly, we have experienced some system errors while using it on Windows 2000, NT, and XP. Theses cause frequent closures which are impeding our effective use of the record system.
Finally, we want to be able to keep a list for each student of their minor infractions (such as arriving late to class or not having all their materials) as these are the kinds of problems we face, rather than the more serious ones such as drugs and weapons. We want for teachers and/or system administrators to be able to keep a record of this kind of infraction on the database, but can't see how we can do this.
